On Saturday the 27th January, a brave group of our employees from PPM Limited and their families, spent the night under the stars to help raise funds for vulnerable older people in Cumbria this winter.
In a bad winter, 300 elderly Cumbrians die every year due to cold weather as they are made to choose between heating and eating.
The Big Sleep is held every winter to raise money for Cumbria Community Foundation’s Winter Warmth Appeal – a pot of cash distributed via Age UK to help older people suffering from rising fuel costs and poor health. In the first four years, the Big Sleep has attracted more than 500 people and raised nearly £100,000 for the appeal.
The event takes place on the shore of Lake Windermere, opposite the Low Wood Bay Hotel in Windermere. This is the second time PPM emloyees have got involved in the event.
In the run up to the event PPM Limited held fundraisers to raise money and awareness of the appeal, including a Christmas Jumper Day for all staff and a Christmas cake sale in our Head Office in Carlisle.
On the big night itself the weather wasn’t the best for camping out, it was wet and incredibly windy. However, this didn’t dampen the team’s spirits and once we had battled against the winds to put up the PPM tent there were lots of activities to enjoy in the main marquee. Our youngest PPM little sleeper, Kayla, had a brilliant time creating shadow puppets with story teller, Ian Douglas. We having a sneeking suspision that the big sleepers enjoyed it just as much and loved getting involved too. Throughout the evening there was hot food and drinks served by volunteers from Calderwood House, family films to watch and a live band to keep everyone entertained.
Once snuggled in our sleeping bags morning came round in no time. We were delighted to wake up to our tent still up around us after some wild winds in the night and the smell of bacon sandwiches being served in the main marquee. After warming up with a hot drink it was time to pack up before the rain set in.
Our PPM team have raised a fantastic total of £821.00 through sponsorship and fundraisers for Cumbria Community Foundations Big Sleep 2018. The team loved taking part in the event and we hope to come along and support this amazing event for a third time next year.
Beth, our Communications and Development officer said: “As a local Cumbrian business we believe it’s important to support local Cumbrian charities whenever we can. Due to the nature of our works, carrying out maintenance in homes throughout Cumbria, we see first-hand elderly people suffering in the cold winters so we thought it would be great for our staff and their families to take part in the event, raising money for an amazing cause whilst having fun and making memories together.”

Fuel Poverty - Fuel poverty occurs when people are unable to heat their home to an adequate level at reasonable cost. There are three key interacting factors that cause fuel poverty: low incomes, high fuel prices and properties that are energy inefficient. The negative consequences associated with fuel poverty include health problems, excess winter deaths and increases in personal debt.
