Some of our PPM team from our Carlisle Head Office and our Workington Depot went along to the North Lakes Food Bank warehouse at Lilyhall to help with packing for the Easter Lunchpacks 4 Kids Scheme. Each bag of food provides a week’s worth of lunches for children whose families may struggle to feed them over the school holidays.
In 2019 the foodbank helped over 6,250 people, including 2050 children, in need of emergency food supplies in the Allerdale and Copeland areas of Cumbria. They gave a total of 14 tonnes of food to children as part of the Holiday LunchPacks 4 Kids scheme. Approximately 4 tonnes of food each month is needed to enable them to help people in short term crisis in the community. With help from their amazing 170 volunteers, the North Lakes Food Bank manage to pack all of the required food parcels and have been doing this for over 10 years.
The Holiday LunchPacks 4 Kids scheme is for the children who are on free school meals due to low income. During the school holidays there is no provision for these individuals, the foodbank wanted to provide greater support for these families so they would not go hungry over these periods. Since 2016 they have been partnering with Primary Schools accross the district to enable access to food for these families.
The PPM team were non-stop and packed a grand total of 250 Holiday LunchPacks for local children. One of our Supervisor's taking part in the volunteering day said "I've really enjoyed today working alongside my colleagues and the North Lakes Food Bank volunteers. It’s brilliant to help a local Cumbrian charity and it’s amazing to see the generosity of local people donating food and their time to this much needed charity"
