PPM Supports World Suicide Prevention Day 2020

As part of World Suicide Prevention Day 2020 our PPM team have taken part in life-saving online Suicide Awareness sessions offered by local Cumbrian charity, Every Life Matters.

World Suicide Prevention Day, observed on the 10th September each year, is an opportunity for organisations and communities around the world to come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where fewer people die by suicide.  The aim of the day is to start the open conversations about suicide and to show that recovery is possible.

There are about 6,250 suicides every year in the UK, over 5,000 of which are men. In construction, it is particularly bad. Every working day we lose two construction workers to suicide – that’s over 500 per year.*

Due to the nature of our work in property maintenance and construction and having a high volume of males within our workforce here at PPM, we felt the suicide awareness training would be incredibly valuable to our team and promoting open conversations about suicide within our workplace.

The 60 minute free online course covers myths and facts surrounding suicide, understanding the signs someone may be at risk, talking comfortably and directly about suicide, how we can provide practical help, and the range of services and support that are available to someone.

Every Life Matters wanted to train 100 people in Cumbria on the 10th September in life saving skills and they’ve actually managed to reach over 180 people on this day alone with extra sessions taking place throughout the next couple of months.

The health and wellbeing of all our PPM team is vitally important to us and we work throughout the year to promote and support positive mental health and wellbeing.
