Carlisle Carers enjoy a day in Keswick with PPM Limited

On Wednesday 14th September PPM Limited arranged for The Carlisle Parent Carers Group to have a trip to The Theatre By The Lake in Keswick to watch " Watch it Sailor" a comedy written by Philip King and Falkland L. Cary.

Carlisle Carers is a local charity that supports unpaid Carers of all ages in the Carlisle and District area. The Young Carers, who may be as young as five, can be caring for Mums and Dads or siblings who may have some complex reasons for needing care and support. Carlisle Carers provide support in the school environment, and have a Young Carer’s club based at the Youth Zone in Carlisle. There is now a middle group of Young Adult Carers aged between 16 and 24 who are establishing their support group. They get a lot of support from meeting and talking to others of a similar age who have a caring role. It can impact on their personal lives in many different ways. Then there is the Adult Carers, aged between 25 and well into their 90s. Many of these unpaid Carers struggle with little or no support, and Carlisle Carers, through a Carer’s Assessment help them identify their needs.

PPM Limited wanted to specifically support the Parent Carers group within the Carlisle area by offering a day trip to Keswick. This particular group is in its infancy and so this trip offered an opportunity for everyone to come together.

Louise Hannen from Carlisle Carers said "We are still in the process of trying to secure funding to run this group, but have decided to just start it as the need for support for Parents is so great locally. Surprisingly they are a particular group of Carers that don’t naturally attract funding to support them, I believe there is an expectation that Parents will just do this with their children whatever the circumstances! Some have really difficult and demanding lifelong parental roles, and as we told you some of our Parent Carers are in their seventies, looking after their children who are now in their fifties with very demanding mental or physical issues. So this group, and your trip are so needed and will be very well appreciated!"

The bus collected 14 members of the Carlisle Parent Carers Group from Carlisle and took them to Keswick in the morning, allowing time for them to browse the shops and enjoy some lunch prior to the afternoon show. On probably the best day of the year weather wise, everyone enjoy the picturesque views of Derwent water and the surrounding landscape. After an ice cream the group gathered at The Theatre By The Lake ready for the performance.

The play " Watch it sailor", a nostalgic comedy, was enjoyed by everyone and was a lovely end to the day.

The feedback from those Carers after the trip was very positive and they were all extremely grateful to PPM for their generosity and kindness in supporting them as a group’.
